Upcoming: M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship 2016 Public Talk

In this public talk, the 2016 recipients of the M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship—Joseph Grima and the team of Juliana Kei and Daniel Cooper—will present the results of their research, illustrating the diversity of topics supported by the fellowship programme.

Kei and Cooper will introduce ‘76 Countries and One Administrative Zone: Hong Kong in World Expos’, focusing especially on the complex interactions of design, identity, and colonial expectations in Hong Kong’s participation in Expo ’70 in Osaka.

Building on his prominent work in the areas of open-source, decentralised, and non-hierarchical design, Joseph Grima presents ‘Open Design Archipelago’, and examines the new paradigms of design emerging in Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta region, where the speed of innovation and iteration is unprecedented, the acts of design and production often coincide, and Western notions of intellectual property and copyright do not necessarily apply.

The two presentations will each be followed by a discussion and Q&A session.

About the M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship
The M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship is an initiative of M+, with the support and funding of the Hong Kong-based nonprofit Design Trust, an initiative of the non-profit Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design. The Fellowship supports high-level research in design and architectural history and contemporary issues relating to Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region, and their relationship to the rest of the world. Begun in 2015 with architectural historian Fan Ling as the inaugural Fellow, the programme will continue with Thomas Daniell in 2017.
