Beyond the Shell investigates how eggshell waste can be transformed into functional, refined design materials through hands-on experimentation. With Hong Kong leading global egg consumption, eggshells are an abundant yet underutilized resource. The project develops innovative composites by combining eggshell powder with bio-resins and natural binders, creating prototypes for objects, tableware, furniture, lighting, and surfaces that showcase both aesthetic and functional potential.

Drawing on the egg’s cultural symbolism of birth, renewal, and transformation, Beyond the Shell bridges tradition with contemporary sustainable design. Public exhibitions and workshops will invite participation, fostering awareness of circular practices and hands-on engagement with material innovation. Collaborating with local food suppliers, artisans, and workshops across the Greater Bay Area, Yellowdot refines material properties and fabrication techniques, transforming waste into value while connecting craft, science, and production—demonstrating the creative and environmental possibilities at the intersection of culture, sustainability, and design.
Yellowdot is a design studio and creative consultancy founded by design-art duo Dilara Kan Hon and Bodin Hon, working across collectible and industrial design, lighting, furniture, and spatial projects. Based between Istanbul and Hong Kong, the studio merges technology, craft, and sustainability through a bold, playful visual language.
Drawing on Dilara’s background in fine arts and interiors and Bodin’s in bioengineering and industrial design, Yellowdot celebrates the meeting of opposites — logic and emotion, art and science, East and West — to imagine new possibilities for design. The studio embraces cross-cultural and interdisciplinary thinking, engaging in projects that span product and spatial design, consultancy, and independent experiments, transferring knowledge between fields and redefining categories through design.
Their work explores the fusion of opposites—logic and emotion, East and West—creating playful yet thought-provoking designs. Their work has earned international recognition — including the Compasso d’Oro, Red Dot Design Award, and ELLE Decoration International Design Award — affirming Yellowdot’s role as a studio that bridges imagination and industry to shape the future of design. Since 2022, their works are represented by the renowned design gallerist Rossana Orlandi in Milan.
