“Future of Design Curation” Virtual Dialogue July 28th 2021; and announcing Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation 2022 Call for Applicants.

Design Trust is pleased to share an upcoming virtual dialogue, “Future of Design Curation” where recent fellows, Design Trust/RCA Fellows Carrie Chan (2018) and Anne Zhou (2019) will present their research exploring curatorial practice and theory in relation to existing and emergent design disciplines, and its place within the interdisciplinary curatorial field. This sharing will bring guest speakers and experts in fields to respond in a roundtable on the “Future of Design Curation” . Welcome and introduction by Marisa Yiu, Co-founder/Executive Director of Design Trust, Sarah Cheang, Head of Programme, History of Design, RCA; alongside the world renowned historian Jane Pavitt, Professor of design and architectural history, Head of Impact at Kingston University London ; former Dean of Humanities at the Royal College of Art (2010-2017) and Research Fellow at the V&A Museum/Brighton University (1997-2010) will chair the conversation amongst invited respondents: Deyan Sudjic, Director Emeritus of the Design Museum, Director of the Design Museum (2006 –2020), Priya Khanchandani, Head of Curatorial + Interpretation, Design Museum, along with Marisa Yiu, Co-founder, Executive Director of Design Trust.

Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation 2022: ‘Hyperlocal’ is open for applications inviting interested applicants for the 2022 Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation deadline of 23rd September 2021 with a focus on the theme ‘Hyperlocal’. Extensively supported by Design Trust, this is a six-month opportunity for two fellows to be selected for research, learning and engagement at the Royal College of Art in London and an opportunity for a museum placement experience in London. Design Trust/RCA 2018 Fellow, Carrie Chan explores how China’s Internet culture is changing self-representation and expression through fashion artefacts and developing a curatorial framework for discussing fashion’s social and cultural significance through a virtual or immaterial experience. Her study culminated  in a “#Re-Fashioning The Internet” - a seminar and workshop that uses China as a case study to explore the Internet’s influence on the way we express ourselves through garments, and the way we create and innovate fashion and other wearables. Carrie’s research emphasizes the Internet, as an integral part of contemporary lives, is also shaping our way of thinking and behaviour in relation to fashion, with the key aim of mapping out contemporary questions on the growing synergy between fashion, technology and the Internet for discussion and narration for future curatorial project development. It explores the cross-boundaries of digital, art and fashion curating. Workshop and seminars were conducted at the Royal College of Art and the Parsons School of Design to encourage students from various disciplines to co-create alternative digital futures.

Design Trust/RCA Fellow 2019, Anne Zhou is interested in the ways in which design curation offers models for expanding design practices to non-traditional design audience, not only by curating exhibitions of extant design projects, but as well as through research, events and other aspects of critical curatorial practices. Her work challenges current thinking and curatorial practice in London and European settings, and expands on design curating networks to localized and cultural site-specificities. Anne delivered eight weeks of workshops where design graduates collaborated with an intended end-user to create an off-the-shelf product that would give them creative agency to participate in the process. The culminating exhibition You and Me in Design: Seminar in a Fruit Shop addressed the subject of sharing ownership in design between the designer and the end-user and how design could be made more relevant through co-creation in the context of China. The final exhibition took place in early September 2020 in the Xinxin Fruit Shop in Shanghai.

Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation 2022: ‘Hyperlocal’ is open for applications inviting interested applicants for the 2022 Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation deadline of 23rd September 2021 with a focus on the theme ‘Hyperlocal’. Two fellows will be selected and awarded six-month fellowship opportunities for research, learning and engagement at the Royal College of Art based in London, extensively supported by the Design Trust. Based at the Royal College of Art in London, the Fellow will undertake advanced research into curatorial practice in relation to contemporary design and recent design history. Areas of focus might include: strategies for exhibition-making, display, interpretation and collections; design archives; design curation in the public sphere; design theory and method as curatorial practice; curating emergent technologies; and history and current practice in design curating.
