“The Neon Girl” is a cross-cultural neon light design, study and practice project that reaches 3 generations, 6 countries, and 2 genders.
As the only female neon light designer and practitioner in Hong Kong, chankalun investigates and incorporate new technology in her design and make 6 distinctive pieces with 6 different neon light masters around the world with “The Neon Girl” project.
Targeted to increase awareness and enrich female empowerment in the main dominant neon industry, chankalun will demonstrate the geographical, cultural and economic impact on the neon light design and production through her new design work with new media and technology that gives new meanings to neon light.
The heritage preservation on the technical skills does not limit to passing on from our local sifu to chankalun, and also learning and absorbing new design, methodologies and skills that enrich our current local design and skill sets.
Based in Hong Kong and Netherlands, Ka Lun Karen Chan aka chankalun has a background of set design, visual merchandising and a master degree of Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design.
With her strong background in spatial design and attentive to details from her visual merchandising work experience at Cartier, chankalun is now focused on exhibition design with multimedia and interactive installations, and has been organising and curating a variety of multimedia and non-commercial projects such as “Step Ink Side”, a tailored-designed Tilt Brush and VR installation for Chloe Ho's solo exhibition, “Ascendence” at Hong Kong Arts Centre, “My Light, My Hood” a group neon art exhibition at KONG Art Space and “Classic Craft, Modern Meaning”, the first public moving tram exhibition in Hong Kong.
Ranged from interactive LED neon light to sustainable installation, chankalun is expanding into large-scale experimental neon light installations recently. Her works have been seen on Wallpaper Magazine, Time Out Bangkok, #Hashtag Legend, SCMP, Goldthread, etc.
