This initiative focuses on the preservation and dissemination of traditional wooden boat building, a critical element of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage that remains largely inaccessible to the general public due to the specialized nature of shipyard environments. To bridge this knowledge gap, the project implements a dual-track strategy comprising an open-source digital platform and a tangible pedagogical tool. Through extensive field research and interviews with over 10 local craftsmen, the team documented authentic construction methodologies and historical contexts to ensure the long-term documentation of heritage skills. These insights were translated into an innovative DIY sampan model kit—designed for individuals aged 12 and up—which integrates technical instructions with historical narratives to facilitate hands-on learning. By collaborating with contemporary practitioners to reimagine intergenerational craftsmanship in a shareable format, the project democratizes maritime design knowledge and establishes a sustainable framework for the industry within the creative and cultural sectors.
