Hoyee Tse

Design Trust and the Royal College of Art are delighted to announce the 2022 Design Trust / RCA Fellow Hoyee Tse. Her project will focus on the contribution of design artefacts to cultural identity and social memory, recognising it as part of the contemporary cultural heritage. She wants to examine the mutual influence between heritage and one’s identity through a socially engaged curatorial practice for contemporary design collection. Hong Kong is a difficult space for achieving this goal although the intermingling of cultures within such a tiny city renders a plethora of possibilities for interpretation. Through this fellowship, she will explore if the concept of ‘hyperlocal’ can solve this challenge by producing narratives based on the local experiences and collective memories.

The Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation was established in 2017 with support from Design Trust, an initiative of the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design. Open to applicants based in Hong Kong or the Greater Bay Area, the Fellowship addresses the burgeoning field of design curating in a global context and locates it within the interdisciplinary curatorial field. It enables scholars to carry out research at the RCA, supported by a tailored programme of academic training designed to broaden their knowledge and skills in curatorial practice, theory and understanding of design.
