Breaching Sanctum delves into the work of a generation of Chinese female artists, designers, and architects born in the 1980s – on the cusp of the 1990s – a decade that continues to impact international Chinese contemporary culture. Coupled with the influence of that era are current developments, innovations, and pressures connected to urbanism, sustainability, the built environment, and technology as well as their own subjectivity and millennial perspectives in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century. Entering an active dialogue between invited participants and audiences, Breaching Sanctum attempts to continue to open up, unfold, and break down barriers that have often been in the path of female practitioners’ research and achievements. The project encompasses an exhibition focusing on newly commissioned art and design works, along with a series of public programmes, a reading area, and publication.

Ingrid Pui Yee Chu, a Hong Kong born Chinese and Canadian contemporary art curator and writer with an MA in Curatorial Studies, Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, 2003, has experience at leading museums and non-profit organisations including Asia Art Archive; M+; and Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong, as well as Creative Time, New York; The Noguchi Museum, Long Island City; The Power Plant, Toronto; and CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco. Chu founded RED-I Projects, an independent curatorial initiative in 2004, and co-founded Forever & Today, a non-profit curatorial platform with Co Director and Curator Savannah Gorton in New York in 2008. Her writing has been featured in Afterall, Art Basel, Artforum.com, Artforum 艺术论坛, , BMW Art Journey, frieze, frieze masters, Kaleidoscope, Kaleidoscope Asia, LEAP, Mousse Magazine, Ocula, Performa Magazine, TimeOut New York, and Yishu among other international contemporary art and culture publications.
