Through an artistic style which has its roots in traditional European painting, Dominique subverts such Western interpretations of the East, giving figures, bodies and objects real agency. Her characters do not belong anymore to the exotic cabinet of wonders, but to a reality where each and single one of them has their own independent value and relevance, taking steps away from the traditional input of imperialist propaganda.
The work has been auctioned off during the Charity Auction on March 22nd 2025 and creatively loaned by the generous bidder for Design Trust Charity Exhibition: Transformational Exceptions.
About Dominique Fung
Dominique Fung (born 1987, works in New York) is a Canadian artist with ancestry in Hong Kong and Shanghai, whose practice explores the subliminal liminal territory in which tradition, memory and legacy seep through our collective subconsciousness. In Dominique’s artworks glossy lines and sensuous touches are merged together with witty and humorous tones, drawing the viewer into a spiral of reinterpretation of the Eastern world. Objects and actors once seen as fetishised trophies of an exotic conquest by Western forces, are now given new power and a new voice.
