This work reveals the rarely seen, raw interior of St. John’s Building — a suspended moment before completion, where the structure existed in its most honest state. The photograph is inspired by conversation between Gary Ng and Lead Curator Marisa Yiu on the unique location of St.John’s Building, highlighting the “D” portal for Design Trust’s ongoing efforts on the urban heritage and architecture research, uniquely created for Design Trust Charity Auction 2026. Within the concrete dark room, three distinctive rectangular windows with softened corners form a cinematic triptych, resembling an architectural film strip found mid-development. Each aperture frames a different chapter of Central’s evolving skyline. The middle aperture looks at the Murray, transformed by Foster + Partners, standing as the present — revitalised, dignified, and actively inhabited. While the curious viewer moves visually from left to right finding inspiration, history seems to deepen in the opposite direction, creating a subtle dialogue between progress and memory. Through geometry, light and layered framing, the photograph reflects on the cyclical nature of urban transformation.
