The set of Henry Steiner’s poster works includes three special posters related to the Peak Tower restaurants and the dynamic dining culture of urban Hong Kong. ‘The Poster of Peak Tower Restaurants’ was created when Henry designed the visual identity system for the first Peak Tower in 1971 (opened on 29 August 1972). This included menus and paraphernalia for The Peak Tower restaurants; ‘Chopstix, Sequences’ was created in 1986 when the American Simpson Paper Company asked 24 graphic designers from around the world to design posters, each interpreting the theme “Sequences”. Henry’s spin on this classic ‘sequence’ is through his addition of an amusing, yet factual, fourth step – a dropped chopstick. The sequence is also a repeating one as step 4 implies a return to step 1; ‘The Flavour of 86, HK Food Festival’ was designed for the HK Food Festival, as part of a set of 3 posters. The 1986 Hong Kong Food Festival was a major culinary promotion organised by the Hong Kong Tourist Association to showcase Hong Kong’s local cuisine to the world. Each poster is uniquely autographed by Dr. Henry Steiner.

About Henry Steiner

Henry Steiner (b. 1934) is an Austrian designer, known for his work in creating branding for renowned Hong Kong-based companies, most notably the HSBC logo, the mythological creature series of banknotes for Standard Chartered Bank, and identities for Hongkong Land, the Hong Kong Hilton, Dairy Farm, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Throughout his career, Steiner has paved the way for graphic design as a profession in the city by pioneering the expression of identity through branding, incorporating Eastern symbolism into Western graphic design. He has helped to create a new and relevant identity for the flourishing, mixed culture of Hong Kong. Steiner continues to work and employ a cross-cultural graphic language in his designs till this day. Steiner has been named Hong Kong Designer of the Year, a World Master by Japan’s Idea magazine, and was included in Icograda’s Masters of the 20th Century in 2002. In 2006, he was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor of the Republic of Austria for design achievement and service to the Austrian community in Hong Kong. Henry Steiner was honoured with the Design Trust Legacy Award in 2021.
