Lu Xinjian’s Reflection series depicts various waterfront landmarks that are indicative of a city’s identity. In the exhibited work, Lu portrays Hong Kong’s own HSBC building as well as its reflection in the water using a vibrant composition of simple lines, shapes, and colors. His manipulation of the imagery not only mediates between the two extreme points produced by the iconic building, but creates an illusionary landscape that points to the complexities of the city.

About Lu Xinjian

Lu Xinjian was born in 1977 in Yixing, China. He graduated from the Computer Graphic Design Department of Nanjing Art Institute in 2000. From 2005 to 2006, he pursued postgraduate studies in identification, product, and interior design at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree in interactive media and environment from the Frank Mohr Institute.

His iconic City DNA series depicts the landscapes of different cities around the world, abstracting topography into simple graphics and lines that incorporate each city’s history and culture. His use of light and shadow generates a mesmerizing visual illusion reminiscent of electric lights and digital effects. In his most recent series Matrix, he shifts his focus from a macroscopic view of the real world to a microscopic inspection of virtual space, confronting the infinite possibilities of AIGC.
