Moso Bamboo
Inspired by the Cantonese-style square bamboo birdcage craftsmanship, the contemporary interpretation of a phone-cage object is handmade from Moso bamboo, using traditional methods without any machinery nor advanced tooling. The cage was crafted using a specialized knife—a renewed version of the classic Hong Kong-style paring knife, redesigned specifically for this purpose. This specialized knife is the result of a collaboration between birdcage artist and designer Dylan Kwok and master bladesmith Mr. Nao Yamamoto from Echizen. Dylan will also host a special craftsmanship workshop for the collector to experience this unique local cultural heritage.
About Dylan Kwok
Dylan Kwok is a designer with a workshop in Hong Kong’s Northern District. In 2019, Dylan was introduced to Master Chan Lok Choi, the city's last professional birdcage craftsman. He began a formal apprenticeship under Master Chan in 2022, mastering the intricate art of handmade bamboo birdcages at Hong Kong's iconic bird market. He authored Open Birdcages, a book that documents this unique tradition and helps preserve Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage. Dylan Kwok received Design Trust Seed Grant for his research “Necessary Edges: Reviving Birdcage Craft”.
