Skip-Park transforms a construction skip into a mobile micro-park combining a playscape, a mini playground or resting space for citizens, and an algae wall designed to absorb excess carbon dioxide. It offers a low-cost green solution for densely populated and polluted districts such as Mong Kok.
Exploring the possibilities and opportunities of “pop-up” and “temporal” spaces, the team decided to work on street skips. Walking the borderline between legality and illegality, they hope to reclaim public space via a network of micro-parks transformed from these street skips.
Stephen and Ffion focused on the research and design of playscape in the skip, while Cesar brought his maker/environmentalist experience by advising on production and the air-purifying design. The team also worked closely with their mentor Mimi.
Our concept is to repurpose a skip into a mobile micro-park, a “photobioreactor” to be accurate. Residents of the neighbourhood can monitor changes in air quality through a series of sensors installed in the skip. This “fresh air rental” service fits right into the density constrain, the availability of a large amount of C02 and the convenience that Hong Kongers love above all.
