DTFS 2019 “Heritage is Innovation” Design Prototypes Preview Highlights

21. 6. 2019

DTFS 2019 "Heritage is Innovation" Design Dialogue was held on 26 March 2019.

Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 “Heritage is Innovation” launched recently. Exploring the animated definitions of Hong Kong identity through new conversations and site-specific objects by Hong Kong based designers, the launch brought together design prototypes related to the context of the recently revitalised 1936 Haw Par Mansion.

The opening preview was held on 25 March 2019, where Tim Reeve (Deputy Director & Chief Operating Officer, V&A Museum) and Lead Curator Marisa Yiu (Co-founder and Executive Director, Design Trust) shared their welcome remarks, followed by a special guided tour of the designers’ prototypes and objects at Haw Par Mansion with DTFS 2019 collaborator Roger Wu (Executive Director, Project Development, Haw Par Music Foundation).

The week also included a design dialogue with presentations from International Mentors Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves (Co-founders, Studio Swine) and Hunter Tura (President and Chief Executive Officer, Bruce Mau Design), exploring their past projects that highlighted areas in which heritage has played a key role. The sharing was followed by a wider discussion between the Mentors and Mentees, along with Design Trust Advisor Beatrice Leanza and Guest Associate Curator Merve Bedir, on heritage values and its influence on their design processes. Several pilot guided tours were joined by students, designers, researchers, and the public on the inaugural collaboration with DTFS and Haw Par Mansion Foundation. Stay tuned for more designs to be revealed in our upcoming exhibition in September 2019.

Thank you to Haw Par Music Foundation, Tai Ping and our foundation supporters for making this launch an inspiring and creative event.
