M+ and Design Trust are pleased to announce the recipients of the M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship 2016: Joseph Grima and the team of Daniel Cooper and Juliana Kei. Now in its second year, the Fellowship—which is hosted by M+, the new museum for visual culture as part of the West Kowloon Cultural District; and funded by Design Trust, the Hong Kong-based non-profit grant-making entity—supports high-level research relating to design and architecture history and contemporary issues focused on Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, in relationship to the rest of the world.

During his five-month term, Joseph Grima, the noted Genoa-based architect, writer and researcher, will build on his well-known work in the area of open-source, collaborative,decentralised, and non-hierarchical design by examining the contemporary design ecosystems of Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta. In a region where innovation and iteration occur at a speed inconceivable elsewhere, Grima will look at how this ‘Open Design Archipelago’ offers a tangible expression of a new paradigm of design, where the acts of design and production frequently coincide and Western notions of intellectual property and copyright do not necessarily apply.

About Joseph Grima

Joseph Grima is an architect, writer, and researcher based in Genoa, Italy. He is a partner at Space Caviar, a design research office operating at the intersection of architecture, technology, politics, and the public realm. In addition, he is currently the Director of IDEAS CITY at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and a unit master at the Architectural Association in London. Grima was previously the Editor-in-chief of Domus magazine—the renowned magazine of contemporary architecture, design and art—and Director of Storefront for Art and Architecture, in New York. He has curated or participated in exhibitions in numerous international venues including the Venice Architecture Biennale, Triennale di Milano, and Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture. He co-curated the inaugural Istanbul Design Biennial in 2012 and was recently the Co-Artistic Director of the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Grima is a graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture.
