DTFS 2019 “Heritage is Innovation” Design Prototypes Preview Highlights

Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 “Heritage is Innovation” launched recently. Exploring the animated definitions of Hong Kong identity through new conversations and site-specific objects by Hong Kong based designers, the launch brought together design prototypes related to the context of the recently revitalised 1936 Haw Par Mansion.

Addressing the burgeoning field of design curating in Hong Kong and the region in a global context, Design Trust / RCA Fellows Mina Song and Sunnie Chan presented their experience and research exploring curatorial practice and theory in relation to existing and emergent design disciplines. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion co-moderated by Doryun Chong (Deputy Director, Chief Curator, M+) and Marisa Yiu (Co-founder and Executive Director, Design Trust) at the Asia Society Hong Kong.

“Criticism Now: Developing Architecture and Design Criticism in the Pearl River Delta” design writing workshop aimed at developing new critical voices in architecture was recently held in Hong Kong, led by Design Trust seed grantee, Los Angeles based architecture critic and curator Mimi Zeiger. With the city of Hong Kong as context and the local design community engaged both as subjects and instigators. Readings, writing exercises, interviews, fieldwork, and research, gave a dedicated group of participants initial skills to hone their critical writing craft.

Design Trust 2019 July Cycle Grant Recipients CALL FOR GRANTS

Design Trust 2019 July Grant Application is now open. Share with us your ideas and proposals by 20 July 2019. Design Trust offers grants to designers, curators, collectives and non-profit organisations for project proposals that are relevant to the context and content of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area region. Grant Recipients from the April 2019 cycle include Kay Wong (Hong Kong); Nils Axen, Zhiping Feng, and Lisa Zhu (U.S.); Joanna Natasza Minasiewicz (Poland/Hong Kong); Tuo Lin, Fengyi Tan, Thourayya Kreidieh, Lin Ying-Chi (Macau, U.K., Lebanon); Janice Li and her colleagues at the Hong Kong Design History Network (London/Hong Kong); and Clare Miflin and her colleagues at the Center for Zero Waste Design (New York). M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship OPEN FOR APPLICATION

The M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship programme will support two separate fellowship projects; one fellowship will support a research project focused on Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area in an Asian or global context, and the second fellowship will support a research project related to Asia more broadly, closely in line with the curatorial position of the Hong Kong–based institution M+. The deadline for submitting the application is 8 July 2019. Apply now!

Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 Research Trip

Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 recently hosted a series of research meetings in Singapore that explored the crossing between cultures, linking cultural, educational, aesthetic, inspirational and economic legacies. Designer-mentees, part of the programme visited Haw Par Villa, Haw Par Corporation, Baba House to National Gallery Singapore on a transformative learning journey to better understand the essence of “heritage is innovation” theme.
