Happy Holidays from Design Trust

2019 is just around the corner and our Design Trust team is reflecting on this year’s incredible journey including the reimagining of the role of micro-parks in Hong Kong through our flagship programme Design Trust Futures Studio; our continuous collaboration with the RCA in London and the M+ museum. This year we have also received an unprecedented number of grant applications, and are pleased to share and celebrate design excellence and the positive role of design at the 11th annual Ambassador's Ball. We look forward to another creative and stimulating year ahead.

Design Trust Call For Grants | 2018 October Grant Recipients

Design Trust 2019 January Grant Application is now open. Join our Design Trust Grant community and submit your application by 20th January 2019. Design Trust Grant Recipients from the October 2018 cycle include Nikolas Ettel (Hong Kong); The Center for Architecture (New York); Bong Yeung and his team (Hong Kong); Elaine Ho and team of Publication Studio (Hong Kong, Rotterdam, Melbourne, Shenzhen), Jasper Dowding (Hong Kong); Lucy Siyao Liu and Austin Wade Smith (New York); Nick Axel and Nikolaus Hirsch of e-flux Architecture (New York); and Yujia Bian and Ruishi Ge (New York).

2018 Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation Announcement

Design Trust and the Royal College of Art are delighted to announce the two 2018 Design Trust / RCA Fellows Carrie Chan and Sunnie Chan. At the RCA Carrie Chan will be exploring how China's Internet culture is changing self-representation and expression through fashion artefacts and develop a curatorial framework for discussing fashion’s social and cultural significance through a virtual or immaterial experience. Sunnie Chan will investigate how visual culture, visual communication and graphic design might facilitate opening design and how curatorial practice might contribute to the meaning of exhibitions for the city.

2019 M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship Announcement

M+, at the West Kowloon Cultural District, and Design Trust are pleased to announce Oliver Elser and Yasmin Tri Aryani as the recipients of the M+ / Design Trust Research Fellowship 2019. Now in its fifth year, the M+/Design Trust Research Fellowship 2019 has expanded into two separate fellowships to address a broader geographic context. Elser will investigate Brutalist architecture in Hong Kong, and Aryani will study the appropriation of traditional architecture in Indonesia. These topics are in dialogue with the curatorial interests and activities of M+’s future planning.

Upcoming Event | Design Trust Futures Studio Exhibition “Play is for the People”

Design Trust Futures Studio (DTFS) is pleased to present “Play is for the People”, an exhibition reflecting on the creative processes and collective design for four distinct locations across Hong Kong. Working closely with the local communities and other stakeholders from both private and public sectors, the design teams translated their findings from site research and analysis, as well as various public engagement sessions into four unique concepts for small sites in Hong Kong. Join us at the Opening Reception on 17th January 2019. Exhibition Period: 17th January – 29th January, 2019.

Design Trust at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennale

Design Trust presented a special Design Dialogue titled “Learning from Heritage” at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennale: A School of Schools. As the first presentation of Design Trust Futures Studio 2019: "Heritage is Innovation" theme as a research programme, the dialogue focused on heritage not as a static subject but a dynamic living and inspiring process.

The Ambassadors’ Ball 2018 in benefit of Design Trust

The Ambassadors’ Ball 2018 in benefit of Design Trust was held on Saturday, 27th October 2018, at the Grand Ballroom of Kerry Hotel. Presented by title sponsor Prada, who has a long-standing relationship with OMA, The Ambassadors’ Ball - HYPER ENVIRONMENT theme, was a visual spectacle conceptualized by OMA’s founding partner-architect Rem Koolhaas and OMA’s managing partner-architect David Gianotten. The annual benefit brought together design industry influencers, stakeholders, art connoisseurs, creative talents, collectors and society icons, to celebrate and promote Hong Kong’s rich community of creativity and design.

Design Trust/ RCA Inaugural Fellow Mina Song’s Exhibition

Mina Song, recipient of the inaugural Design Trust / RCA Fellowship in Design Curation presented [] White [City] Cube [] as part of her year-long fellowship, at White City Place in London, from 1st November to 8th November 2018. Throughout her time at the RCA, Mina worked closely with supervisor Dr. Sarah Teasley and has been supported through a programme of studies as well as a curatorial placement under the guidance of Brendan Cormier at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Design Trust is pleased for Mina to expand and extend her research upon her return in Hong Kong.

Design Trust x BODW Panel “Culture and the City: Contemporary Heritage/ Translating Culture”

Design Trust co-presented a special panel “Contemporary Heritage/ Translating Culture” at Business of Design Week (BODW) 2018’s forum “Culture and The City”, exploring the role of design activism in curating contemporary heritage, and how it shapes and informs cultures, while challenging the status quo. The panel reconceptualized the idea of curating contemporary heritage as translating culture, and how through navigating the complex processes of generating layers of history we can create cultural resilience through time.
