Design Trust 2018 October Grant Application is now open. Share with us your ideas and proposals by 20th October 2018. Design Trust offers grants to individual designers, curators, collectives and non-profit organisations for projects and activities that are relevant to various design disciplines to the context and content of Hong Kong and the Greater Pearl River Delta region. We support innovative, thought-provoking investigations in various design disciplines from graphics, media, wearables, architecture to the built environment. Design Trust Grant Recipients from the July 2018 cycle include Adam Fingrut from the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture; Ron Wan and Mildred Cheng from dtby_ (Hong Kong); Mimi Zeiger (United States); Calvin Hui (United States); Kit Chan and Myriem Alnet from SunSat Store (Hong Kong); Saswati Das (United States) and Francisco Garcia Moro (Bangkok).

The recipients’ projects range from exhibitions to research on urban design, festival to cartography and automation in construction building. This cycle’s Feature Grant Recipient Adam Fingrut from the Chinese University of Hong Kong will be building the Yard of Environmental Sustainability (YES) Pavilion using mechanically engineered brick construction and further explore and develop on computational research solutions; “Criticism Now: Developing Architecture and Design Criticism in the Pearl River Delta” by L.A. based architecture critic and curator Mimi Zeiger will be a two-part workshop that focuses on developing critical writing in architecture and design in the PRD; Francisco Garcia Moro will be researching into urban design and phenomena of the PRD, and specifically the illegal façade customisation in Macau, Hong Kong New Territories and Guangzhou; and Saswati Das’ project will explore the physical and non-physical urban values of the Kowloon Walled City in comparison to Mumbai. In graphics, Ron Wan and Mildred Cheng of dtby_ (Hong Kong) will be initiating an immersive graphic design festival in Sham Shui Po to bring together the art and design community of Hong Kong; Kit Chan and Myriem Alnet of SunSat Store (Hong Kong) will be developing “Mapgazine”, a cartography themed magazine highlighting Peng Chau’s culture, with an aim to bridge the gap between old residents and newcomers. Last but not least, Calvin Hui is developing a book that examines the Chinese middle-class and consumer culture through lenses of fashion, media, as well as stories of wastage and migrant workers.
