Upcoming Workshop | “Criticism Now: Developing Architecture and Design Criticism in the Pearl River Delta”

“Criticism Now: Developing Architecture and Design Criticism in the Pearl River Delta” is a weeklong English writing workshop that aims to develop new critical voices in architecture and design in Hong Kong, a place that needs more communication channels to represent its growing creativity in architecture, design, and urbanism. The workshop has a creative format where participants work in a diversity of HK spaces, from an academic library setting, a co-working space, the newest “co-living” HK community area, in- between public spaces, to a bookstore context, to explore the act of critical writing using the city of Hong Kong and the local design community as both subjects and instigators. Come join us!

2018 M+ / Design Trust Research Fellows Presentation

On 2 March, our 2018 M+/ Design Trust Fellows team Fan Lok Yi, Sampson Wong and Hugh Davies presented and later discussed their research during their fellowship. Hugh Davies presented the many variations and depictions game developers have on Kowloon Walled City. Duo Sampson Wong, Fan Lok Yi explored Paul Selinger’s remarkable sculptural playground and play sculptures in Shek Lei. Both presentations were followed by panel discussions with guests: Thomas Chung, Shirley Surya, Marie Foulston and Ikko Yokoyama.

Design Trust / RCA Curatorial Fellows Events In London

Design Trust/ RCA 2018 fellows Sunnie Chan and Carrie Chan recently presented works and curatorial workshops in London. Sunnie Chan recently curated event “Design Curators Clinic”, a workshop that allows curators to gather and discuss curatorial practices. Please also stay tuned for our upcoming Design Trust/ RCA announcement on call for applicants with deadline on 2 May 2019 and the returning fellows sharing coming April 2019 here in Hong Kong.

Design Trust Grant Recipient Center for Architecture | New Practices in Hong Kong Architecture: A Symposium

On 1 March, Design Trust Feature Grant Recipients Benjamin Prosky, Berit Hoff Lavender, Camila Schaulsohn, Barry Bergdoll and Seng Kuan of Center for Architecture (New York) presented a symposium focusing on the innovative design and architectural solutions of Hong Kong. Using Paul Rudolph’s drawings of Hong Kong as a springboard – designers, architects and planners discuss the new social and cultural contexts in Hong Kong that differs to Rudolph’s original visions.

Call for Grants | January 2019 Grant Recipients

Design Trust 2019 April Grant Application is now open. Share with us your ideas and proposals by 20 April 2019. Design Trust offers grants to designers, curators, collectives and non-profit organisations for project proposals that are relevant to the context and content of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area region. Grant Recipients from the January 2019 cycle include Cao Fei (China); Ip Yuk-Yiu (Hong Kong); Jeroen van Ameijde (Hong Kong); Stephanie Fung and her team of UpCycling Plus (Hong Kong); Isabel Mager (Netherlands); and Brendan Cormier (London).

Upcoming Event | Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 “Heritage is Innovation”

Design Trust is pleased to launch the next edition of Design Trust Futures Studio 2019 “Heritage is Innovation” in the old 1936 Haw Par Mansion. DTFS 2019 curates new conversations, site-specific objects by Hong Kong based designers, who have been involved in the Design Trust foundation as grant recipients and designer mentees for the last years. New International Advisory Council Member: Tom Dixon

Design Trust is thrilled to welcome Tom Dixon as our new International Advisory Council Member. Tom Dixon (OBE) is a world-renowned British designer and Creative Director of eponymous brand Tom Dixon (est. 2002). His works are included in permanent collections of the world’s most prestigious museums, including the V&A and MoMA. Tom is excited to work with Design Trust in empowering talented designers and research scholars to positively impact our community.

Design Trust Grant Recipients Brian Kwok & Anneke Coppoolse | Exhibition: DESIGNING THE SPECTACLE – Pre-Digital Graphic Design Practices

Design Trust Grant Recipients Brian Kwok and Anneke Coppoolse (Information Design Lab) recently held an exhibition showcasing their research in the design and craftsmanship of neon lights in Hong Kong. This survey of the design and production of a key part of the city’s visual culture traces the history of Hong Kong’s graphic design in the pre-digital age. The exhibition took place at Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, Jockey Club Innovation Tower from 20th to 30th August 2018.
