Sitting Out Area under Hill Road Flyover
The Sitting Out Area (SOA) under Hill Road Flyover is located in Shek Tong Tsui. It is approximately 314 sq. m in size and has easy access from both the Queen’s Road West and the Lower Hill Road. There are a few benches and Chinese chess tables within the SOA perimeter. The support columns of the Hill Road Flyover are currently painted with graffiti and drawings, and the sitting out area mainly serves the local community.
Looking into the context of the site and its history with the entertainment culture, brothels, movie scenes and gas company, the team explored the idea of play and inclusiveness, and proposed different design solutions and ideas for the linear site that is mostly occupied by elderly males, playing chess and gathering for different events and movies.
Utilising repetitive geometry and zoning, the team has devised a flexible design with the least intervention, creating a multi-functional space for people of different ages, and for activities at different times of the day. Using a post and poles system, the team aims to create identifiable but different equipment to cater to the changing notion of play, and to create new planter designs that bring about different experience for users.
The team continues to conduct site visits and researches, and to meet their mentor, advisors and different related public and private agencies in order to create a human-centric and contextual micro-park for future Hong Kong.
